Passive experiment with polished rock and mineral chips fits inside the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sleeve that holds OsmoSamplers. Water flows through perforations in the HDPE sleeve as a result of convection in the borehole, and polished surfaces offer opportunities for microbial attachment and growth. B. Flow cell experiments containing crushed mineral substrate. The OsmoSampler shown at the top of the image pumps crustal fluids through the two flow cells below it. The lower flow cell is a biotic experiment and the upper flow cell is an abiotic control. The two cells are connected by Teflon tubing and a 0.2 µm filter. Flow cell components are attached to a ½ inch steel rod that passes through the center of the units.
