Richard Arculus (Co-chief Scientist, The Australian National University, Australia) and Osamu Ishizuka (Co-chief Scientist, Geological Survey of Japan/AIST, Japan) give an overview of Expedition 351 scientific goals during Ambassador Kennedy’s tour. “Samping basement material associated with the very beginnings of subduction zones will give clues to plate tectonics and mechanics. We are investigating what links the belts of deep sea trenches, giant earthquakes, and explosive volcanoes,” said Dr. Arculus. “Each of these are components of the Pacific Rim Ring of Fire.” (Credit: Bill Crawford, IODP/TAMU) [Photo ID: exp351_008]
