We are not sure when and how the Penguin became an official crew member. The rumor mill has it that the Penguin was rescued from a trash heap discarded by a cruise ship and now, with a fresh coat of paint, greets visitors to the JOIDES Resolution. Having a bit of fun with the new mascot are (from left): Marco Maffione (Paleomagnetist, Utrecht University, The Netherlands), Antony Morris (Paleomagnetist, Plymouth University, United Kingdom), Lorne Loudin (Inorganic Geochemist, University of New Hampshire, USA), Sev Kender (Paleontologist, University of Leicester, United Kingdom), Michael Gurnis (Physical Properties Specialist, California Institute of Technology, USA), and Clara Sena Da Silva (Inorganic Geochemist, Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal).
