The convergence of geometric lines and patterns rising up the derrick on the JOIDES Resolution. The derrick rises 205 ft off the water (depending on fuel load and stores) and 147 ft off the drill floor. The structure is capable of lifting 1.2 million pounds. Typical hanging weight (i.e. the weight of all drill pipe, bits, etc.) ranges from 300,000–700,000 lbs. The ship can carry and deploy 30,000 ft of drill pipe.
