Luis Campana (Siem Offshore, Welder) works on a reentry cone, a 14 ft diameter galvanized steel funnel used to guide the drill bit back into the borehole. Because of its size and weight, the cone is transported to the ship in “kit form,” then it is bolted and welded together on the main deck adjacent to the moonpool. Air-powered winches called tuggers are used to position the 13,000 lb cone over the moonpool. (Credit: Richard Arculus & IODP) [Photo ID: exp351_054]
