Gene Yogodzinski (Igneous Petrologist, University of South Carolina, USA) and Anders McCarthy (Igneous Petrologist, University of Lausanne, Switzerland) examine photographs of core sections to select intervals where they will request samples. A typical core section is labeled from 0–150 cm, so a scientist may decide the area of interest is the 26–28 cm interval of that section. That 2 cm interval is removed from the core section and delivered to the scientist for experimentation. As the science party works in shifts, the scientist requesting the sample may or may not be the person who actually does the sampling. (Credit: Bill Crawford, IODP/TAMU) [Photo ID: exp351_056]
