Close to the bow: the combination of a wide-angle lens and close approach gives an imposing view of the bow of the JOIDES Resolution. The red line on her hull shows the water line, where the ship sits in the water when fully loaded. At this point in an expedition (the fifth week), the ship has used a good portion of its stores of fuel, food, and other expendables; therefore, she is sitting or floating high. The white lettering seen on the hull on either side indicate the draft (in feet) of the hull at this particular weight and configuration. Shown also are the anchors, each of which weighs 4210 kg, or 9281 lb. (Credit: Bill Crawford, IODP/TAMU) [Photo ID: exp351_090]
