JA Daily Science Report for Expedition 309, 24 July 2005

LOCATION: Site 1256

SCIENCE UPDATE: Recovery in Cores 88R to 92R (840.2 to 873.8 mbsf) decreased significantly to only 5.11 m (15.2%) along with a concomitant increase in rate of penetration, likely due to the rubbly and fractured nature of the formation. The rocks are aphyric, cryptocrystalline to microcrystalline, slightly altered dark grey basalt sheet flows with some glass and altered hyaloclastite. In order to try and boost recovery half cores were taken from Core 90R and Cores 91R and 92R were drilled without liners but high recovery remains elusive.
