IODP Expedition 318
Wilkes Land Glacial History
Daily Science Report for 8 March 2010
LOCATION: Arrived Hobart, Australia!
SCIENCE UPDATE: Successfully concluded the IODP Wilkes Land Expedition (318) the first IODP Expedition to the Antarctic.
Daily Science Report for 7 March 2010
LOCATION: In transit to Hobart, Australia
SCIENCE UPDATE: Our transit home continues! Today the air temperature rose from 10°C to 19°C (sea temperatures from 12°C to 18°C). Scientists continued their postcruise research discussions and submitted their revised sample/data requests and draft titles for postcruise publications. Completed lab cleaning and final preparation of shipments. Estimated time of arrival at Hobart pilot station is 1000 hr on 8 March.
Daily Science Report for 6 March 2010
LOCATION: In transit to Hobart, Australia
SCIENCE UPDATE: Our transit home continues. As we move north the air and sea temperatures continue to rise (10°C and 12°C, respectively). Assembling Expedition Summary Report. Scientists met to discuss coordination of research plans for the recovered Miocene sections. Scientists are revising personal research plans and associated sample/data requests as well as developing draft list of publications. Continue to prepare shipments and clean laboratories. Estimated time of arrival at Hobart pilot station is 1000 hr on 8 March.
Daily Science Report for 5 March 2010
LOCATION: In transit to Hobart, Australia
SCIENCE UPDATE: Our transit home continues. As we moved north today, air temperature rose from 6° to 8°C and water temperatures from 5° to 10°C. Assembling parts of Expedition Summary Report. Scientists met to discuss coordination of research plans for the recovered Holecene and Ecocene-Oligocene. Continue preparing shipments and cleaning laboratories.
Daily Science Report for 4 March 2010
LOCATION: In transit to Hobart, Australia
SCIENCE UPDATE: Our transit home continues. All are enjoying slow increase in air temperature (2° to 6°C throughout the day). Reports from final site have been submitted. Scientists met to discuss coordination of research plans for the recovered Pliocene-Pleistocene sections. Sample shipments being prepared and lab cleaning started. Ships crew is rigging down winterizing equipment, tarps, and temporary shelters.
Daily Science Report for 3 March 2010
LOCATION: In transit to Hobart, Australia
SCIENCE UPDATE: At 0030 hr, we started our transit to Hobart. We are making good progress with the ship rolling and pitching gently over a surprisingly flat sea. We passed a few large icebergs in the distance. Science party met to discuss results from Site U1361.
Daily Science Report for 2 March 2010
LOCATION: Site U1361 (WLRIS-05A; 66°24.57'S, 143°53.20'E, water depth 3470 mbrf)
SCIENCE UPDATE: Retrieved the FMS-Sonic logging tool string, pulled out of Hole U1361A, offset 50 m to the north, and started coring in Hole U1361B. Cores U1361B-1H and 2H penetrated to 12.1 m and recovered 12.0 m (100%). After Core 2H arrived on deck, we had to stop coring to start preparations for our transit to Hobart. Scientists finalizing reports and discussing postcruise research collaborations and core sampling. Technical staff preparing for lab shutdown and clean-up as well as organizing cores and samples for postcruise shipment.
Daily Science Report for 1 March 2010
LOCATION: Site U1361 (WLRIS-05A; 66°24.57'S, 143°53.20'E, water depth 3470 mbrf)
SCIENCE UPDATE: After preparing the hole for logging, we conducted successful runs with two tool strings – (1) the Triple Combo (gamma, porosity, density, caliper, acceleration/inclination, resistivity), and (2) the FMS-Sonic (gamma, acoustic velocity, acceleration/inclination, and microresitivity imaging).
