Research Interests
- During an active, 20-year research career, I developed a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the continental crust of the Earth with emphasis on the thennal, chemical, and physical evolution of the upper mantle and crust through the planet's history. Research within a wide array of related disciplines mineralogy, crystallography, experimental petrology, rock physics, thermodynamics, and spectroscopy was combined to elucidate the quantitative pressure-temperature-time development of ancient mountain belts. Our work challenged established dogma of lower crust as andesitic in composition. We proposed new models for crustal growth that required the vertical addition of basaltic magmas at the base of existing crust, rather than by the lateral accretion of andesitic island arcs, previously viewed as the primary mechanism for crust formation.
