A perhaps once in a lifetime event! Two "green flash" events in one day! Alex Nichols (Volcanology/Petrology, Institute for Frontier Research on Earth Evolution, Japan) captured the morning light and Erdenesaikhan Ganbat (Petrology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences) photographed the evening sun show. Green flashes are optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise. A fleeting moment in time, the green flash appears no more than one or two seconds and is a result of the refraction of light in the atmosphere. Oceans are a good place to observe them, but the weather and the conditions make it a semi-rare event. (Credit Alex Nichols & Erdenesaikhan Ganbat & IODP) [Photo ID: exp330_162]
