Co-Chief Scientist Richard Murray (Boston University, USA) steadies the core liner as Kristin Bronk (X-ray/Microbiology Laboratory, IODP-USIO/TAMU) drills a hole in the line to relieve trapped gasses. As the surrounding pressures decrease, gas expands in the core liner, forming pockets that break and separate the sample material. Relieving this pressure can allow such gaps to be closed.
