What words does one use to describe what is seen in a core sample? There are many choices in the Value List, the collection of descriptive terms. Consistency is key in order to convey in understandable terms what has been visualized. Shipboard party members, recognizing the challenge, have implemented a new “Rock Classification Guideline.” Ivan Savov (Sedimentologist, University of Leeds, United Kingdom) and Rosemary Hickey-Vargas (Igneous Petrologist, Florida International University, USA) are busy visually describing the core in front of them. Shown on the monitor in the background is the Guideline created by the Expedition 351 Shipboard Scientific Party. (Credit: Bill Crawford, IODP/TAMU) [Photo ID: exp351_034]
