Ocean Drilling Citation Database

Search the database

Introduction

The Ocean Drilling Citation database contains almost 30,000 citations related to Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, and International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) research spanning from 1969 to the present. Approximately 32% of the citations are from publications produced by the drilling programs (e.g., ODP Proceedings series) and 68% are from serial publications, abstracts, conference proceedings, maps, etc. The database is hosted by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and is updated on a weekly basis from entries made to the GeoRef database.

IODP Member Services

Annual analyses of the database are available for download as annual IODP Ocean Drilling Citation Reports. In addition, member countries/consortiums can request statistics on what their authors are publishing. Statistics are gathered based on the affiliation of the first and/or contributing authors. Statistics can be provided on where and how often authors are publishing. Searches are based on the most recent AGI CD compilation. To make a request, please contact Citations@iodp.tamu.edu.

User Guide

Conduct a Database Search

You may choose to search individual fields, multiple fields, or all fields at once. Field categories are: title, author, affiliation, volume title, volume author, source, year of publication, research program, and key words.

After you enter the search words, click the “Submit Query” button. The results of your search will be displayed in the table format (one of three available formats). To view the records in the brief record or full record format, select the desired format by clicking on the drop-down list at the top of the search results page. A maximum of twenty records will display on each screen. To view additional records, click the “Next 20 Records” button.

Conduct Additional Searches

If you wish to maintain part of the search information from your previous search, use the browser “Back” button to return to the main search screen. The “New Search” button also returns you to the main search screen, but clears the query fields of all information.

Copy and Download Citations

Citations may be copied directly from the screen and pasted into word processing or spreadsheet software programs.

The database format includes a download feature that imports the information from the database directly into EndNote. The import comes through into predefined EndNote fields. The data can also be downloaded into other bibliographic software programs, however, the contents may need to be edited by the researcher.

To prepare citations for downloading:

  1. Store selected records into the “InfoCart” (the storage area for selected citations that will later be exported into the bibliographic software package) by clicking on the “Select” button located in each record.
  2. Your selected records will be stored in the “InfoCart” for up to 7 days and can be downloaded into a bibliographic software package at any time during this period.
  3. The records stored in the “InfoCart” may be viewed only from the main search screen. (Use the “Back” button on your browser.)
  4. Follow instructions located in the “InfoCart Help” (click on the “InfoCart Help” button located on the main search screen).

Get Help

Help information is available for conducting a citation search and for using the InfoCart to download citations into bibliographic software.

To access the help information on conducting a citation search, click on any of the field names on the left side of the main search screen. A white “Help” button will appear when you bring your cursor over a field name. Click this button to be linked to the appropriate section of the Help file.

To access information on using the “InfoCart” to download citations into bibliographic software packages, click on the “InfoCart Help” button at the bottom of the main search screen.

Note: If you click on a “Help” button and nothing appears to happen, the Help window is probably hidden behind the main search screen window. All help information is located in one file that opens in a separate window from the main search screen window. If you read help information and do not close the window before you go back to the main search window, you should set up your viewing windows in a tiled format so that you will be able to locate the help file window next time you click on a “Help” button. Otherwise, the window will remain hidden behind the main search screen window.
