Lisa Tauxe (Paleomagnetist, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA) loads a core section into the cyrogenic magnetometer. This instrument detects the faint magnetic signal imparted on some minerals by the Earth’s magnetic field. Changes in the orientation of the field are used to help determine the age of the core.
