Girish Sharma (Kumaun University, India), a paleontologist who specializes in radiolaria, examines a water sample for these tiny zooplankton. We took seawater samples at depths of 0, 5, 10, and 15 m below sea level to examine the living plankton assemblages found in surface waters to compare to the remains found on the seafloor. Surprisingly, many species found in the seawater do not get preserved as fossils! (Credit: Bill Crawford, IODP JRSO) [Photo ID: exp355_106]
