Rajeev Saraswat (Physical Properties Specialist, National Institute of Oceanography, India) runs whole-round core sections through the Whole-Round Multisensor Logger. This instrument measures the bulk density of the sediment through gamma ray attenuation (how many gamma rays can make it through the sediment), magnetic susceptibility (how easily the sediment is magnetized), and P-wave velocity (the speed at which an acoustic wave travels through the sediment). These measurements are taken before the whole-round core section is split in two, and gives the scientists an idea of the sediment composition before they can see it.
