A tug nudges up against the starboard bow of the JOIDES Resolution. Tugs are used to move the ship in and out of its docking space. At its maximum weight, the ship can tip the scales at 37,272,000 lb (17,000,000 kg), although unloaded it is quite a bit slimmer at a mere 20,000,000 lb. Understandably, port authorities would like to keep control of such a heavy vessel until it clears their waters safely. (Credit: Marci Robinson & IODP) [Photo ID: exp353_003]
